Today on The Tasting Room with Wine Guy Mike, my special guest is Courtney Kingston, owner of Kingston Vineyards located in the Casablanca Valley of Chile. Kingston Vineyards is situated in the Western Hills of the Casablanca Valley in Chile.

Chile is a very narrow country that is 2600 miles in length from North to South. At its widest point though it is only 100 miles wide. The moderate Mediterranean climate is not only ideal for growing world-class grapes it has significant European influence stemming from the large number French, German, Spanish, and English that have relocated there.

There are three very distinct climate influences from the East to the West in Chile. Likewise, there are also three main grape growing regions that run from North to South in Chile. The Coastal Region is cool and moist from the Maritime influence, the Central Valley’s can be very warm, while the Andes Mountain region can be warm or very cool depending on the season and location.

The three major grape growing regions of Chile are the Casablanca Valley where they grow Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot noir, this area is located within the Coastal region. The Maipo Valley produces Cabernet Sauvignon and is located in the Central Valley region while the Rapel and Colchagua Valley’s grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Merlot grape varietals. These valleys are situated from North to South.

The migration of Europeans over time has influenced the arts, culture, styles of food, and certainly winemaking. Argentina and Chile both are considered New World winemaking countries, yet due to the outside influence of Europeans who have migrated to Chile, there can be an Old World winemaking influence. For Kingston Vineyards Old World winemaking methodologies are definitely present in their handling, fermenting and aging of their wines.

For instance, the majority use of Native yeast rather than commercial inoculated strains of yeast is an example of Old World winemaking technique. Another example is their winemakers use of older barrels for fermenting and aging Kingston wines, imparting far less tannin, aroma, and flavor to the wines. The Kingston Vineyard Chardonnay is partially fermented and aged in cement vats which are a technique used to have a neutral effect on the wine as opposed to wooden barrels that impart texture, aroma, and flavor or steel tanks that can impart a tart crispness, almost metallic style effect on a wine.

The three Kingston Vineyard Wines we are featuring today on The Tasting Room are the Tobiano Pinot noir, the Lucero Syrah, and the Cariblanco Sauvignon blanc.

The Tobiano Pinot noir is cold soaked for at least 5 days, this extracts the right amount of color and mellow’s the tannins. It is fermented utilizing mainly Native yeast allowing the grape to speak for itself. This wine was named for a Paint horse residing on the vineyard that looks as if it had a couple cans of paint throw on it.

The Lucero Syrah grapes are grown highest upon the hillsides at Kingston Vineyards where they receive the greatest amount of sunshine. The Syrah grapes from various blocks of the vineyard are cold soak fermented separately after being de-stemmed, although some of the grapes are fermented together as a whole cluster. The grapes are then put into older neutral wine barrels for a second native fermentation imparting a subtle smoothness into the final product, the wine.

Lucero is a horse from the farm that the vineyard is also located on. The horse was named for the bright white flash on his forehead!

The Kingston Vineyards Sabino Chardonnay has been fermented in French Oak Barrels and concrete tanks. Native yeast natural fermentation allows this wine to have a particular sense of place. It needs a bit of age so I recommend laying it down for at least one year.

The Kingston Vineyards Cariblanco Sauvignon blanc has a combination of Native and inoculated yeast used in the fermentation process. The wine is finished in steel tanks where it undergoes partial malolactic fermentation, helping to settle the acidity. Cariblanco is a horse that resides at the vineyard too, his face is a stunning white!

Courtney Kingston is the owner of Kingston Family Vineyards in the Casablanca Valley of Chile.  Kingston was a past guest on the WineGuyMike Radio Show™ and Mike had a chance to sit down with Courtney on Wine Time and find out what’s new at her family vineyards and most importantly talk about her family’s wines.

This is a story of sustainability and it was at Stanford while completing her graduate studies that she solved an age old problem; how to sustain a ranch beyond 3 generations.  Kingston’s answer, plant grapes to sell to other wine producers and use 10% of the premium harvest to produce wines under the Kingston Family Vineyards label.

Kingston’s grandfather was a mining engineer from Michigan who in 1906 relocated to Chile to work for a gold mining company.  While he never realized that dream of striking gold he married a Chilean woman and settled what 5 generations of the Kingston clan have known as the “Farm”.

The “Farm” is a large cattle ranch and dairy farm located 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the western hills of the Casablanca Valley in Chile.  There are three distinct climates ranging east to west and three main growing regions from north to south that make up the terroir of Chile’s grape growing areas.  The Coastal Region is a cool climate, the Central Valley is warm, and the Andes Mountains can be cool or warm depending on the location.

The major grape growing regions of Chile are the Casablanca Valley featuring (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir), the Maipo Valley featuring (Cabernet Sauvignon), and the Rapel & Colchaqua Valley’s that feature (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot).

Kingston’s grandfather was not the only risk taker in the family, Courtney’s strategic plan included growing not only Sauvignon Blanc which was common to this region but she planned to also grow Syrah and Pinot Noir which was not.  Kingston enlisted the help of winemaker Byron Kosuge and the rest is history.  Sauvignon Blanc was planted in the flat sections of the farm while the Syrah and Pinot Noir were planted to the higher hill sides.

Kingston Family Vineyards goal has been to produce premium wine at affordable price points offering true consumer value.  They have accomplished this goal and these wines receive the WineGuyMike Seal of Approval™.  The Tobiano Pinot Noir and Cariblanco Sauvignon Blanc are available at the Market on Front.

What’s in a Glass?

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a stemware demonstration with Maximillian Riedel, the 11th generation family member representing the Riedel Wine Glass Company. Riedel has been making grape varietal specific wine glasses for 300 years, and I have been using their stemware for 20 years.

I have studied wine nearly my entire life but the 90 minutes I spent in the demonstration was by far but also the most compelling.  This demonstration truly stirred my wine soul. 

 Form versus function is a familiar term, and for the Riedel Company it is a combination of both.  When we open a bottle of wine to let it breathe, decant, or aerate the wine we are introducing oxygen which “opens up” the wine and brings out the aroma and flavor of the wine.

There are 2-3 elements of wine that create aroma and flavor.  The first element is the fruit, and the second is the yeast that is used to ferment the wine.  Fruit and yeast combine during fermentation to produce aroma and flavor or sense of taste.  The third influence upon the wine in your glass may be the oak barrel that the wine was aged in.  Some varietals of white wine are fermented and aged in steel; in this case there is no oak influence to the sense of taste or aroma.

Red wine and some varietals of white wine like Chardonnay spend more time in oak barrels.  Red wines in particular benefit from barrel aging. During fermentation red wines get their color from the skin of the grape. Tannin occurs as a result of grapes and their skins soaking together during the fermentation process.  Barrel aging allows the red wines to develop depth of color and refine or settle tannin which is the grittiness you experience when drinking a red wine.  Different varietals produce different amounts of tannin.  For example Pinot Noir will express less tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fruit, yeast and wood produce aroma, flavor, and tactile sensation when you drink wine.  Your palate can sense four different tastes – sweet, bitter, salty and sour.  The mouth can also “feel” cool, warm, dryness, tingling, a coating feeling, and a feeling of numbness.

Sweetness is perceived immediately when you taste a wine as this area is located right on the tip of your tongue.  Acidity in a wine is recognized in the cheek, on the sides of the tongue, which is the area that senses “sour” flavors, and also in the back of the throat.  Lighter red wines and white wines generally have a higher degree of acidity.

The middle of the tongue is the area that recognizes anything salty.  In the case of wine, this is where tannin, which is a tactile sensation, is felt.  When wines are young the tannins are what make a wine present as too dry.

Fruit and its individual varietal characteristics are smells not tastes.  But the weight of the wines fruit will be felt on the middle of your tongue.  This is why wines are referred to as light, medium, or full bodied.

The aftertaste, or finish of a wine is what happens when you actually swallow. In a good wine, this is a very pleasing sensation with all components of a wine coming together in harmony and balance.

Carl John Kingston was a miner and engineer from Central Mine, Michigan.  In 1906 Kingston set out for Chile and joined the Cerro de Pasco Mining Company.  Kingston never struck gold but he married Caroline Los Kamp and settled on “The Farm”.  Kingston wound up with the land known as “The Farm” as a result of one of his many mining deals. The land was a large dairy farm and cattle ranch situated 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and nestled in the western hills of the Casablanca Valley in Chile.

In today’s modern era most farms are not sustainable for more than three generations.  Courtney formulated a plan of sustainability during her graduate studies at Stanford.  She wrote a business plan that incorporated growing high quality grapes on the Kingston family’s cattle ranch and dairy farm.

Inspired by California vineyard visionaries, David Hirsch and Gary Pisoni, Courtney’s plan called for planting pinot noir and syrah grape vines in an area known only for white grape cultivation.  The Kingston family’s mission was to grow world class quality red grapes in a cool weather climatic zone.  In 1998 pinot noir and syrah grape vines were planted on the western hills of the Kingston’s Casablanca Valley farm.

The Kingston family led by Courtney’s plan harvested their first grapes in 2003, the result was 400 cases of pinot noir and syrah. Under the watchful eye of the Kingston family and two amazing winemakers, Byron Kosuge and Evelyn Vidal, Kingston Family Vineyards produce one of the best values in wine today.  Their portfolio of wines feature Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.  All of the wines are named for horses on “The Farm”.
